A local day out: Pevensey Castle
A Roman Saxon Shore fort with a Norman castle built inside it, which is an unusually neat piece of layering. The Roman walls are among the best preserved in Britain, and there are machine gun posts from 1940 disguised in the medieval masonry, because the site was refortified against another invasion 1,600 years after the first one. English Heritage, and a short walk from the beach.
