A tangle of medieval lanes running down to the Stade, where the largest beach-launched fishing fleet in Europe still works. The net shops, tall black weatherboarded huts built to store nets, are unlike anything else on the coast. Two Victorian funicular railways climb the cliffs on either side, and the East Hill lift is the steepest in the country.
