Sandhills sits at Mudeford, on the edge of Christchurch where the Stour and the Avon meet the sea.
It is a sheltered, estuarine corner of the coast, with a harbour, a quay and a sandbank that costs a fortune to own a beach hut on.
A local day out: Hengistbury Head
A long headland of heath and cliff between the harbour and the sea, with a Bronze Age burial mound on top and a view along the coast to the Isle of Wight. There is a land train out to the sandbank if legs are short. Free, open all the time, and the best walk in the area by a distance.
