It is a working harbour village on the edge of a large nature reserve, with Camber Sands just across the river.

Over a thousand acres of shingle, saltmarsh and gravel pits, with a modern Discovery Centre, several hides and flat, easy paths straight from the village. Terns and avocets breed here, there are rare shingle plants found almost nowhere else, and the ruined Mary Stanford lifeboat house stands out on the shingle as a memorial. Free, open always.
