A town stacked up a cliff above a gorge of the River Nidd, with a ruined castle on top, a railway viaduct across the middle and rowing boats on the water below. Mother Shipton's Cave sits on the far bank, home to a petrifying well that turns objects to stone, which is the oldest paid visitor attraction in England, open since 1630. The view from the castle grounds is free and one of the best in Yorkshire.
