A local day out: Dymchurch beach and the Martello towers
The beach is flat, sandy and vast when the tide is out, with the sea wall running behind it as a promenade. Along it stand the Martello towers, squat brick forts built against a Napoleonic invasion that never came. Tower 24 at Dymchurch is preserved and opens to visitors on published days. The combination of an enormous free beach and a fort to look at covers most of a day.
