Burghead sits on a headland on the Moray Firth coast, in the corner of Scotland that gets more sunshine and less rain than almost anywhere else in the country.
The village is a working fishing port built on top of what was once the largest Pictish fort in Britain.
A local day out: The Burghead Well and Pictish fort
Cut into the rock beneath the village is a chamber with a stone-lined water tank, reached by steps, thought to be an early Christian or Pictish site and quite unlike anything else in Scotland. Above it, the headland holds the ramparts of the fort. The visitor centre in the old coastguard tower explains it and the view over the firth from up there is the best in the village. The Burning of the Clavie, a fire festival, happens here every January.
