Golden Sands sits at Dawlish Warren, on the sand spit that reaches out across the mouth of the River Exe.
The beach here is long, shallow and backed by dunes, which makes it about as good as south Devon gets for small children.
A local day out: Dawlish Warren National Nature Reserve
The far end of the spit is a protected reserve of dunes, mudflats and saltmarsh, with a visitor centre and hides. In winter it fills with waders and Brent geese off the estuary; in summer it is orchids and butterflies. Free, quiet, and about two hundred yards from the amusement arcades, which is a strange and pleasing contrast.
