A local day out: Skipton Castle
One of the best preserved medieval castles in England, largely because it survived a three-year Civil War siege and was then repaired rather than slighted. The roof is intact, so children can go through the whole thing, including the dungeon and the watchtower, in the dry. There is a yew tree planted in the courtyard in 1659. The town outside has a canal basin and a market four days a week.
